Topics covered in the
Forest Management Training (FMT) include overview of forestry in Papua
New Guinea, background on Ecoforestry, community development, forest functions,
components of sustainable forest management, principles and criteria for forest
management, forest management plans and forest planning principles, and forest
certification.
The course is conducted in 2 phases. The theory part is conducted in the classroon for 1 week and it includes field visits to forest nurseries and forest management areas. The practical component takes more than 2 weeks, and it includes forest inventory and boundary survey in forest management areas, land use planning and forest management planning. The practical component aims to enable resource owners to be aware of the importance of their forest and the need for good forest management practice and to assist them to get acquainted with forest management techniques and to gather and document forest resource data for forest management planning.
Forest
Management Operation
The Ecoforestry operation covers establishment of a forest management
system which includes preparing harvesting set-up, cutting and milling timber,
timber grading, tallying, transport, market, and services/spares, understanding
the establishment of the eco-timber process and work towards incorporating
FSC principles ad acquiring FSC certification.
Sawmilling
Training
Sawmill training is conducted in set-ups as part of harvesting and
utilization training for forest resource owners. The course covers good
forest managment practices (directional felling, cross cutting), sawmill types,
operation and maintenance and sawmill management (quality control, timber
volume calculation, timber grading and pricing). The course is conducted on
set-ups with hands-on training . The main objective of the course is to equip
forest resource owners to use a sawmill as a tool to sustainably manage and
develope their forest resources.
Timber
Business Training
Small business training is an important component of forestry training
programs for resource owner wanting to start a forest-based business such
as sawmilling. The training course is affiliated with Small Business Development
(SBDC's) Start Your Timber Business (SYTB) and Improve Your Timber Business
(SIYTB) program and includes topics such as business awareness, what is business,
business planning, cash flow, profit and loss statement, forms of business,
legal responsibilities, record keeping, and bank reconciliation. The main
outcome of the timber business training is the production of a timber business
plan incorporating forest resource data gathered from forest surverys.
